Veronica

Words by Lauren Bulla

Veronica presents us with yet another tantalising visual aid to her otherworldly music. Her newest video release, “Hurt You Most” went live just in time for Valentine’s day on February 14th. An ode to every stupid, (not so) silly mistake the ex-boyfriends of your past made, and the unsavoury outcome of their transgressions - awaits your viewing pleasure.

Veronica is a sorceress on the mic - enthralling audiences regardless of subject matter. Once she appears on stage, you’ll find it increasingly harder to take your eyes off her. With a penchant for audience engagement - you’ll realise quickly, with little warning - that Veronica is leaps and bounds ahead of your wildest expectations.

A true commander of the genre-bending variations of art pop she produces, her persona on and off stage is as whimsical as it is pointed. She never says anything she doesn’t mean, and this earnestness is equally adorable, as it can be frightening. As I consider myself to be someone with a particular reverence for vile women, femmes who lean into the grotesque, beautiful faces which compliment putrefied guts tied to strings - I cannot recommend her latest release enough.

Telling the tale of an unforeseeable (really? you’re surprised?) love gone awry - Veronica paints a fraying-white-crepe-dress scene, backgrounded by gorey foreshadowing. The narrative unfolds as she depicts the moment she gave her heart away to a lover who took it for granted at best, and completely decimated her sense of self at worst. But never fear, do not pity the heartbroken. As her tale materialises, her betrayal is reclaimed. Repurposed and imbued with witchy tones - her proceeding actions depict a lesson oft improperly learned, but certainly unforgotten. Indeed, if you mess with a whimsical songstress, with a bit of a dark edge… Your wrongdoings will live forever.

Veronica reconciles the narrative, creating space for whimsy to leach from the frame as the production ends with her repeatedly puncturing a gore-soaked cake. This comes after shots of animal hearts (wink) remain tied with red ribbon amidst the treeline. If you haven’t picked up on the artistry which meets master storyteller by now - get to know. Veronica’s leading us by the hand, wise up and take it - as you surely don’t wanna end up with the other poor saps who underestimated where she’s going.
