Barrus | London Fashion Week AW25

Barrus brought a storm to London Fashion Week – and by that, I do mean a literal storm. The Friday night of fashion week was, in true London style, wet. However, after waiting in the rain, thanking my past self for having the foresight to bring an umbrella, we were ushered off the Shoreditch streets into Protein Studios. As the lights dimmed to a glowing red, Barrus’ AW25 contribution to London Fashion Week emerged onto the runway. The collection was inspired by the ancient city of Ephesus, home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Temple of Artemis. In this case, the city is used to symbolise the feminine spirit; its strength, grace, and resilience.

The garments communicate the narrative of this city – once a melting pot of arts and culture – balancing the structure and strength of its architecture, with weightless, flowing fabrics and drapery. Central to the collection are a number of dramatic gowns, asymmetrical draping, and striking corsetry, the latter seemingly has invaded countless collections this season, finding a place on runways in every corner of the city. There is subtle contradiction in the Greco-Romanesque structure and delicate grandeur of the collection. It transitions, garment by garment, through the colours of dusk and dawn – soft pinks and lilacs, and pale yellows – each embellished by metallic silver and gold embroidery and hand-beaded crystals, hypnotic under the runway lights.

Sourcing eco-conscious materials to craft their garments; recycled fabrics and ethically sourced silk, elevated by French lace and tulle. This commitment to sustainability and ethical fashion is not only indicative of the label’s desire to innovate, but equally its respect for history, heritage, and craftsmanship. As the only Turkish designer at London Fashion Week, Barrus had a distinct opportunity to represent the nation's artistic output. The collection is consistent with what Barrus knows best; elevating traditional, beloved silhouettes through contemporary designs, all while telling a compelling story and presenting a vision for the future of their country’s artistic direction.
